No yard too odd for the Pattern Master Pulsating Sprinkler; once it's programmed for a custom watering pattern, it repeats that pattern every time. The Pattern Master is a unique, adjustable sprinkler that waters virtually any shape lawn without wasting water on fences and driveways. This innovative impulse sprinkler waters up to 5,800 square feet and features a 43-foot watering radius. An easy-to-use programming disc adjusts up or down at sixteen positions within a single rotation-cutting the spray short to avoid the flower bed; going a little longer to soak that freshly planted tree; then launching a broad sweep across the far end of the yard so there's no need to relocate the sprinkler down there later. With full rotation control, watering just about any obstacle course of a lawn is possible! Customer Review: Ingenious and effective sprinkler

Kudos to the engineers who designed this sprinkler for coming up with a creative solution for all of us who have non-circular yards! It offers the long-distance spray of an impulse sprinkler combined with the ability to shape the spray to rectangular and even irregular spaces. I've been using it for several weeks and am very pleased with it.
It doesn't have quite the range of the old-fashioned stick-in-the-ground impulse sprinklers I've used. In my yard it can spray a maximum of about 35 feet, or 70 feet in diameter. Presumably the "XL" model has a stronger spray if you need more coverage.
Others have noted that once you have it adjusted properly, you want to be able to move it out of the way and then put it back exactly where you had it. I agree, and came up with one way of solving the problem. I cut four pieces of 1/2-inch dowel about 8 inches long, and pounded them into the ground at each inside corner of the sprinkler base, leaving them sticking up about an inch above ground. I then spray-painted the ends with bright red paint so I could find them easily. They work perfectly as locating pins so I can place the sprinkler in exactly the same location and orientation every time, and they're low enough so I can mow right over them. They also keep the sprinkler from rotating during use, which I noticed it did very slightly before I installed the pins.
How long will it last? My guess: The flexible plastic ring that you adjust up and down at 16 points to control spray distance will eventually crack or break. I'm thinking sunlight and extreme cold will be its biggest enemies, so I plan to keep it indoors when I'm not using it regularly.
